Canadian doctor jailed 4 years for taking drugs

An Abu Dhabi criminal court sentenced a Canadian plastic surgeon to four years in prison and ordered his deportation after he was convicted of taking drugs.

The court also ordered him to pay Dh16,000 damages to a taxi driver who suffered from a fractured nose after the doctor assaulted him.

Police had arrested the surgeon just after he stepped out of an Abu Dhabi hotel and attacked the driver. Medical tests showed he had taken drugs.

But the doctor denied the charges and told court that traces of hashish could have been found in his body because of passive smoking as he was in a night club before his arrest. He also produced a medical report by a colleague stating that the nature of his work at the hospital could have caused such drug-like substance in his body.

Newspaper quoted the doctor, who works at an Abu Dhabi hospital, as saying after Wednesday’s trial he would appeal the verdict.
