Two Ethiopian maids allegedly stole Dh254,971  in cash  and a big quantity of gold jewellery and watches from their employer’s house and hid them in their pillows.

The two maids SAA, 25, HFB, 26, took advantage of the fact that the employer’s family had moved to a new house and the cash and jewellery were still in bags kept in a wardrobe.

“We moved to a new house and then I had to attend my grandmother’s funeral. I did not have time to deposit the money in the bank and to keep the jewellery in a safe place,” testified the wife, MDS, 53, Emirati teacher.

“On January 15, I saw the bags in the wardrobe before going to work at 7.15am. After returning home at around 4.30pm, I needed some money. Opening the wardrobe in my bedroom, I did not see any of the bags. I asked my mother who was in the house whether she had seen the bags. She answered no. So we informed the police who searched the house and found the cash and the jewellery stuffed in the maids’ pillows. The two confessed to theft and said they had hidden some of the jewellery in the store,” she testified.

Police confiscated about 160 pieces of gold jewellery and eight expensive watches and the cash found in the possession of the two maids.

The court will give its verdict on March 21.
