A cleaner who allegedly stole Dh30,000 from his manager’s office had to admit to the theft when police found the money hidden in a sack in the company’s kitchen.

Egyptian manager AK, 38, told police that he was the last staffer to leave the company at 7.30pm.  He ensured that the door was locked after keeping an envelope containing the money on his desk.

“I came to the office on the next day at around 11.30am and was shocked not to find the envelope on my desk. I asked all the staff including the cleaner and all denied knowing anything about the envelope and the money.

“Later in the afternoon I informed the company’s owner who agreed to notifying the police. Police searched the company’s premises and found the money hidden in a sack underneath the wash basin. The cleaner admitted to stealing the amount from my office and hiding them where they were found,” he testified.

The 37-year-old Bangladeshi cleaner started crying when questioned by policemen about the money found hidden in the kitchen. He claimed that he took it as he found it on the floor near the manager’s desk.

The Court will issue its sentence on June 27.
