Cosmohealth health centre in Al Ain shut down

UAE health authorities shut down a major medical centre in the eastern oasis town of Al Ain, accusing it of committing massive professional violations, involving employment of unlicensed doctors and improper storage.

The licensing committee at the Abu Dhabi Health Authority (ADHA) said it decided to shut Cosmohealth Medical Polyclinics, suspend the licences of all its staff members and refer the case to the prosecutor.

The closure followed repeated complaints that the centre was persistently violating health rules employing unlicensed medical staff, offending health standards and ignoring safety of patients.

“Following inspection of this centre, we decided to shut it down and refer the file to the prosecutor,” said Dr Ali Obaid Al Ali, head of organization at ADHA.

Quoted by the semi official daily Alittihad, another ADHA official said the committee had received complaints about illegal practices at Cosmohealth, a general medicine, dermatology and dental centre.

“We made random visits to the centre and discovered some illegal practices…we also found an Arab doctor who was treating a patient without licence while there were also other doctors working at the centre without licence,” said Dr Mohammed Al Saigri, director of health control at ADHA.

Dr Jamal Al Kaabi, head of the customers’ service at ADHA, said “it has become a public opinion case”, adding that the centre would be severely punished.

“We can not remain silent towards such violations and we urge the public to report any offences in this vital sector,” he said.

“I am surprised that some people refrain from making an official complaint to avoid a scandal…but I say that the scandal is the failure to report such illegal practices and leaving such institutions tamper with patients this way…we call on all people to reject treatment by doctors who are not licensed.”
