Dubai’s customs authorities arrested a Pakistani man after he tried to smuggle drugs inside a pen, the latest technique followed by narcotic traffickers in the emirate.

Officials said the man was entering Dubai through its airport when customs authorities suspected him and searched all his items.

“An amount of heroin and other drugs was found inside a pen the passenger had…he was referred to the prosecution ahead of his trial on drug smuggling charges,” the Arabic language daily Emarat Alyoum said.

Several people have been caught smuggling drugs to Dubai in their shoes, hair, abdomen and other means.

Maid abandons illegitimate baby for 4 days

An African housemaid dumped her illegitimate baby in an isolated room for four days at her ageing Emirati employer in Dibba Al Hisn before the boy was found and saved. The maid and her Gulf lover were both jailed and ordered deported.

The employer’s brother was visiting his sister when he stumbled across the crying baby in the shut room at the house in the eastern town.

“He found the baby who was struggling for life after he was left by his mother for four days…the boy was found in a very serious condition and rushed to hospital in Dibba Al Fujeirah,” the Arabic language daily Alkhaleej.

It said the unnamed maid was sentenced to one year in prison and ordered deported on charges of adultery and endangering the life of her baby. Her lover, a Gulf citizen, was sentenced to six months in jail and ordered deported from the UAE.
