A Chinese woman allegedly offered a Dubai Customs employee a bribe of Dh10,000 to help her solve the problem of a shipping container stopped for not having a customs declaration, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

The accused JS, 22, who clears cargo with Dubai Customs, approached AM and asked him about a certain container.

“I told her that the container was stopped and its documents transferred to Port Rashid’s Legal Affairs Department because there was no custom declaration document,” said the employee.

JS took the employee’s mobile number to communicate with him if she needed help. The woman continued calling the employee from time to time regarding the container.

“One day she sent me an SMS asking me to help her and that she will appreciate that very much. I informed my seniors who asked me to carry on with the woman. Five days later, she called me and asked me to meet in a hotel on a road near the port. During the meeting she offered me money without specifying the amount if I helped her solve the problem,” said AM.

The employee went back to his senior and police was informed about the incident. The employee told the woman that he will review the file of the container and get back to her. As the two had agreed on Dh10,000, they met in the parking lot of Etisalat’s main office. After receiving the money, the woman was arrested.

The court will reconvene on April 13.
