An inspector at the Ministry of Labour allegedly asked a salon owner to pay Dh50,000 bribe if she didn’t want her business closed, Dubai Criminal Court heard.

On December 27, JD, 42, Chinese, owner of the salon received a phone call from someone who claimed to be inspector at the Ministry of Labour.

“I thought it was the same inspector I had met last year, when I was issued a fine of Dh80,000 that I paid. So, I continued the conversation with him,” she testified.

The inspector asked the woman if the salon was open because the ministry wanted to inspect the premises. Later, the inspector allegedly told her that if she likes to avoid closure of her businesses, she should to pay him Dh60,000. In that case, he promised that he would not inspect the place as well.

“I was afraid. I told him I did not have that amount. So he reduced it to Dh50,000 and told her that he will send his brother to collect it from her. I asked him to give me some time to manage the amount,” she said.

The following day, the inspector called the woman again and asked her for the money, threatening to otherwise down the salon.

So I informed the police.

Later police arrested HI, 31, Emirati inspector, for seeking bribe. Driver, RM, 20, is accused of criminal complicity.

The court will reconvene on June 1.
