An Indian expatriate from Kerala has been languishing in a prison in Abu Dhabi for over a year now, despite serving his jail term, as his family is unable to raise the Dh200,000 required as ‘diya’ (blood money) payment.

Shine Thulasidharan, 32, was sentenced to three years in prison and asked to pay diya after he was accused in the murder of a Pakistani worker in 2008.

Shine’s aging mother has approached the Overseas Indian Affairs Ministry and the Indian embassy to facilitate her only son’s release.

Shine was arrested with two others after a brawl between Indians and Pakistanis at a labour accommodation in Mussaffah led to the death of Mohammed Aslam Jalal Khan.

Two other accused – Gulam Basheer and Nadir Khan – were sentenced to six and three months in prison respectively.

Shine’s prison term was reduced to three years after the deceased’s family agreed to accept the diya amount.

Though Shine has completed four years in Al Wathba jail, his release is still uncertain because of the non-payment of the amount.

Shine’s neighbour Vijayakumar said he is trying to raise the amount from kind-hearted expatriates here in the UAE.

He added that Shine’s family is in dire state after their son’s arrest.

The family had mortgaged their house and taken loans to obtain a UAE visa for Shine.

Being the sole breadwinner for his family consisting of his parents and a younger sister, Shine’s release is the only hope for the family.

Just one kiss, 7 years ago in Mumbai, lands Indian in UAE jail

A romantic fling seven years ago in India has landed a 30-year old MBA graduate in an Abu Dhabi jail.

A photograph of Suhail (name changed on request) kissing his then 'girl-friend' during a party in Mumbai in 2003, is what sealed his fate.

The picture was used by the girl’s husband to prove an extra-marital affair between his wife and Suhail in the Court of First Instance in Abu Dhabi.

The court convicted Suhail and sentenced him to 18 months in jail.

However, after serving six months in prison, the High Court temporarily suspended the judgement, pending appeal.

The man has approached the Indian embassy for legal help.

According to legal sources, Suhail met the UK-based Pakistani girl when she came down to Mumbai as part of a tour group in 2004.

Cupid struck, and the duo had a great time in India, but soon lost touch with each other after she went back to UK after a few months.

A year ago, the pair met again in Abu Dhabi, as the girl had relocated to the emirate with her husband.

As per the complaint filed at the embassy, the pair had only met thrice in Abu Dhabi, and the accused claims that the girl never revealed her true identity.

He also claims that he did not have any physical relationship with the girl and did not even know that she was married.

The husband filed for divorce in the UK based on the allegations, and got a favourable verdict after Suhail was found guilty by the Abu Dhabi court.

Illegal migrant arrested in Saudi... for 41st time

A Yemen man who was arrested 40 times by Saudi police and deported back home for illegally entering the oil-rich Gulf Kingdom for begging was seized this week for the 41st time, a newspaper reported on Monday.

Dubbed as the “infiltration expert,” the man has been jailed pending his deportation again but he vowed to sneak back across the border.

“When police arrest him, he shows no fear or anxiety as he knows well that the punishment will not exceed a few days in prison before he is deported back to Yemen,” the Arabic language daily Alriyadh said.

“When police arrested him in Riyadh this week for begging and staying in the country illegally, he said he would be back soon.”

The paper quoted the unnamed man as saying that sneaking into the Kingdom across the border with Yemen has been very easy for him.

“It only costs me a new shoe,” he said. “I use it to walk in the desert as smuggler drop me just before a border check point and I keep walking away from that point until I am inside Saudi Arabia…there, I find other smugglers who just feel sorry for me and take me to the city…they never asked me any questions.”
