A driver allegedly bribed a petrol station attendant by paying him Dh20 for each bogus receipt for filling the company vehicle with Dh200 worth of diesel.

AJZ, 42, Pakistani, is also accused of embezzling Dh2,000 which was kept with him for filling the company’s vehicle with diesel. AJZ is facing criminal complicity with the petrol station’s attendant RBB, 32, Nepali.

RBB is accused of accepting a bribe and forging electronic receipts. RBB admitted to issuing false electronic receipts for filling the vehicle with Dh200 worth of diesel for the accused about 10 times against a bribe of Dh10 to Dh20.

AJZ admitted to embezzling about Dh2,000 of the company’s money.

AM, 26, Pakistani, assistant worker, testified that the accused used to approach the petrol station near the company’s premises between 1am to 3am and used to ask the attendant to fill the truck with Dh100 worth of fuel and get receipts for Dh200.

“The accused then used to approach the company’s accountant and collect money as per the receipts. He used to do that about 15 times every month over the past five months,” he testified.

The company’s finance manager, OJ, 40, Jordanian, testified that the company had received a tip-off  that the accused been swindling the company  for three years by submitting false receipts after paying Dh20 bribe to the station’s attendant.

“Calculating the embezzlement by deducting half the value of the receipts submitted by the accused, we found out that he had swindled around Dh165,000.  So we lodged a complaint with the police,” he testified.

The court adjourned the case for verdict until July 26.
