An Ethiopian driver, along with an accomplice, allegedly offered a lift to a man for Dh10 and, after he got into their car, assaulted and robbed him of Dh3,000, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

In January 2013, at around 11.30am, the victim, SA, 30, Pakistani, machine operator, was waiting for a public transport in Al Aweer when a white Corolla car stopped next to him and the African driver and his companion offered him a lift to Deira for Dh10.

“I agreed and got into the car and sat in the front seat next to the driver as the other passenger was sitting in the back seat. After driving for five minutes, the driver stopped opposite the Central Jail.

“When I asked them why they had stopped, the man sitting in the back seat slapped me on the neck and then he got off the car, opened the door and pulled me out of the car by my hand, while the driver was also pulling my left hand into the car. The man who was outside the car, pulled out my wallet, stole the money (Dh3,000) and threw it away. Then he pulled me out of the car and the driver this time kicked me out. I fell on the ground and they sped away,” said the victim.

The victim called the police and lodged a complaint. He recognised one of the accused when his picture was shown to him.

IA, 29, was under investigation in a similar kidnap and theft case. Arresting him, he denied any relation with the crime.

However, the victim recognised him when shown via identification parade.

The court will reconvene on June 21.
