An Abu Dhabi criminal court sentenced an Asian man to life in prison after he was convicted of smuggling drugs into the emirate through its airport.
The man was caught at Abu Dhabi airport with 63 narcotics capsules hidden inside his stomach and destined for a person in the UAE.
The man told police that he was asked by an unknown person at home to take the capsules to the UAE in return for Dh200,000 but that he did not know what they contained. He said he also does not know the target in the UAE as he was told he would be called after arrival.
Customs men at the airport had suspected the man when they saw him swaying and looking pale. At hospital, an X-ray image revealed he had swallowed the capsules and was given a laxative to release them.
