The Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance sentenced a Syrian truck driver to seven years in jail for possessing drugs for selling but acquitted a compatriot of the same charge for lack of sufficient evidence.

The court also ordered RM, 37, to pay Dh50,000 as fine and to be deported after serving his jail term.

Following a tip off, police raided RM’s house in the French Cluster in International City. RM admitted to possessing amphetamine tablets in his car.

The raid happened a few minutes before SS, 27, driver, arrived to pick up the tablets.

RM also admitted that his compatriot, who lives in Kuwait, had asked him to pick up the tablets that were hidden under a truck stopped at a petrol station in the same residential area.

“I went there, picked up the drugs and put them in my car. I was supposed to hand them over to SS who would transport them to Kuwait. I did that against money. The man in Kuwait was supposed to send me money after the operation,” admitted RM.

While police were questioning the dealer, his country man arrived down the building to pick up the drugs.

Under police control, RM went down and stepped towards SS so police could arrest him.

SS admitted that he had come to collect the drugs that he was supposed to transport to Kuwait.

RM admitted before prosecutors that he did that twice before his arrest. He also said that he had got Dh25,000 for two previous operations.

SS denied the charges when he appeared before the court.
