An Emirati policeman was charged on grounds of taking bribes from drivers to waive off their alleged fines incurred for violating traffic rules.

He would stop trucks driven by Indian and Pakistani drivers.

MAT, 23, Emirati Corporal pleaded guilty to asking about 70 to 80 motorist to pay bribes to him.

According to the records of the first case, on January 19, at around 9pm, the accused, stopped MAA, 29, Pakistani truck driver, on the Emirates Road towards Al Ain.

“A Nissan Patrol was flashing to me. I stopped off the road and so did that Nissan driver…. He asked me for the license and card. As he was wearing a T-shirt and a a pair of jeans, I asked him for his ID. He showed me his military card and said that I violated the traffic law by driving on a wrong lane and said that the fine for this violation is Dh2,000.”

He continued, “I begged him to help since I have a family whom I am responsible for. He agreed to reduce the fine to Dh1,000 adding that Dh500 should be paid instantly and the other Dh500 would have to be paid in Bur Dubai police station. He seized my driving licence. He gave me his mobile number to call him in order to pay the remaining amount and get the licence.”

The next day when I called him, he was in Bur Dubai police station and he asked me to go to Al Ghussais. I went there and he came in the same car. I paid him the money and got the ticket and the driving license.

Policeman, Adel Ali, testified that they had received information via Ameen service about a Corporal MAT, who works in the patrol section at Jebel Ali police station. The policeman said that vehicles, mostly pickups were stopped during the after-work hours. He mainly targets Indian or Pakistnani drivers, issues them traffic tickets and then forces them to pay the fine.

Furthermore, he refrains from inserting the ticket into the computer system. He only inserts the fine, when the driver does not cooperate with him.

On February 7, IAM, a Pakistani driver AA complained to the police that he was stopped by Corporal MAT who issued him a fine of Dh3,000 and asked him to give him the money and that he would pay the fine on his behalf.

Police trapped MAT and arrested him while he was trying to con another man AA in the International City.

The second case was logged by BJA, a Pakistani truck driver who was issued Dh3,000 fine by the accused.

BJA testified that he argued with the policeman who stopped him and issued him a ticket when he had not committed the traffic violation. The corporal also threatened with impounding his vehicle in addition to the fine if he refused to pay him the Dh3,000.

“He took my mobile number and he asked me to meet in Al Ghusais Metro station three days, where I paid off the full amount,” testified BJA.

In the third case the accused asked JZS, Pakistani to pay him Dh370 to cancel the traffic ticket he had issued him.

In the fourth case, the accused asked SMH, for Dh400 bribe to cancel a traffic fine.

The fifth case was heard by the court earlier last month.

The Court adjourned the case until July 25.
