The Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance sentenced a housemaid to one year in jail for putting a baby’s life in danger by leaving the house with the baby alone in it.

However, the court acquitted 24-year-old Indonesian WN of the charge of stealing Dh17,000 from the house.

According to the records, the maid’s employer, AS, 29, Egyptian, told investigators that she left the house in the morning with her husband for work. At around 10am, she remembered that she had forgotten an envelope with money in it on the hairdresser. She called her husband and informed him about the envelope.

Her husband AM, 30, finance manager, tried to calm her down, saying the maid won’t take the money. “However, I called the maid at my home number. She answered me and told me she had finished her work before she stopped answering my phone calls. I informed my husband who rushed home to check on the maid but she was not there,” AS testified.

“I entered the house and saw our baby on the floor with her cap covering her face. My wife also arrived and found the envelope missing,” testified AS.

The building’s watchman told the police that he saw the maid leaving the building and was carrying a yellow packet that she was holding against her chest. “She was walking fast and as I was busy I did not talk to her,” he said.

Her employer told police that the maid fled after finding the envelope containing money. The records did not mention how police arrested the maid.

The prosecution noted that the maid’s statements contradict with the testimonies of the employer and the watchman. She claimed that she had taken a bag contained her clothes. The prosecution accused the maid of stealing Dh17,000 and putting a baby’s life in danger.

The Court ordered the maid to be deported after serving her jail term.
