Four burglars from the US and Latin America broke into a villa in Dubai’s Jumeirah in the absence of its resident and stole jewellery worth Dh1.5 million, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

Indian manager TA, 63, travelled on vacation the first week of July. When he returned to UAE, he noticed that the lock on the villa’s main door as well as the kitchen were broken.

“I was shocked to see that the locks were broken and the kitchen window was open. I rushed to the bedroom and found it in a complete mess. I immediately checked the safe box where my wife and I kept jewellery and precious watches. The safe’s lock was broken and it was empty,” he told investigators.

The manager reported the theft to the police.

Police investigated the complaint and, two days later, the manager was asked to visit Bur Dubai Police station to identify his jewellery.

“A team was formed to help arrest the thieves. Investigations led police to think that the suspects had used a rented Range Rover. Checking with the rent-a-car-company, it found out one of the suspects had used an Argentinian passport.

“Checking on the name of the passport’s holder, we found out that he had never entered the UAE. After losing track of the suspects, we could identify RA, American, who had rented a Honda Civic,” Captain Ali Saeed told prosecutors.

Investigations led the police to think that the suspects stay in Al Nahda area in Sharjah.

After keeping surveillance in the area and on the building, a day after receiving the theft complaint, police arrested the American and his Colombian accomplice DA. The two resisted arrest while the third, MO, Mexican, who was in the car, tried to run away.

“While running away, he collided with a police patrol, got off the car and tried to run away from the scene. We ran after him, caught and overpowered him,” said the officer.

Police confiscated a large quantity of jewellery and precious watches in the flat of the accused.

The American admitted to the theft and confessed about a fourth accomplice.

Police arrested the fourth suspect, MA, Colombian, while trying to flee the UAE on July 9 through Al Hilli border post using a Spanish passport which proved to be forged.

Police asked the complainant to visit Bur Dubai Police station and identify his jewellery.

“I could identify some of the jewellery and after my wife returned from leave, she identified the rest,” said the victim.

The American, Colombian and Mexican are accused of committing the theft.

The second Colombian is accused of criminal complicity and incitement for committing the crime.

The Mexican is accused with a fugitive of passport forgery.

The court will reconvene on October 22.
