Dubai Police seized 154 luxury cars in just one week for racing on roads, according to a top official.

Colonel Saif Mohair Al Mazroui, Director-General of Dubai Traffic Police, said the seized cars included a Lamborghini, Maserati, Porsche and Ferrari among others, reported ‘Al Khaleej’ Arabic daily.

The vehicles were seized after the department monitored the motorists who were driving recklessly.

Col. Al Mazroui said such motorists were both nationals and expats. They normally rent the luxury vehicles during holidays, and hit the roads not only endangering their own lives but also those of others.

He added that the seized vehicles belong to car rental firms, which charge a daily rental of Dh7,000 to Dh8,000.

Col. Al Mazroui said it’s unfortunate that there are people who spend most of their salary on renting such expensive cars just to show off.

He pointed out if their car is impounded, they will be forced to pay the hefty daily rental till the car is released.

Also the violator is obliged to pay the traffic fines.

Such incidents cause daily rentals and fines to accumulate to many thousands of dirhams.

Col. Al Mazroui said the period of impound in reckless driving cases will range between one week and three months, depending on the seriousness of the offence.

He said motorists who have an earlier record of reckless driving will be forbidden from paying fines in order to release their vehicles. This is as per directives from Major-General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police.

A Maserati impounded recently was being driven by an African without a number plate. A Ferrari was seized for racing on streets. Both were rented cars, he added.
