Emirati woman jailed 3 years for killing maid

An Emirati woman used hot water and power cables to torture her Asian housemaid to death, saying she hated domestic workers after her ex-husband had an affair with a maid they had hired before, newspapers reported on Tuesday.

In court, the woman was convicted of premeditated murder and sentenced to three years in prison. The judge also ordered her to pay diya (blood money) to the victim’s relatives after they agreed to pardon her in return for diya.

The maid was found dead inside the bathroom by her employer’s son at their home in the capital. Medical tests showed she had been severely beaten up and tortured with boiling water, a stick and a power cable.

The woman had denied involvement in her death and tried to cover the crime with the help of her two daughters, when she told them to wear gloves and change her clothes.

But forensic tests discovered the trick and showed the woman was behind the murder. Her daughter later told court she had seen her mother torturing the maid many times.

“The woman told court that she had done so because she has a psychological problem against housemaids after learning her ex-husband had an affair with one of them,” the Sharjah-based Arabic language daily Alkhaleej said.
