Employee sacked for stealing magazines wins

An Abu Dhabi court challenged a decision by a government department to sack a female employee for alleged stealing of magazines and ordered it to reinstate the employee immediately, press reports said on Monday.

The woman, a marketing manager, had filed a case against the Abu Dhabi-based department for failing to promote her to head of section but was surprised that the department decided to sack her just after the court opened hearings.

The unidentified department accused the employee of stealing magazines and newspapers from its offices and told court that it is authorized under its statute to terminate the services of employees without notice.

A court rejected that argument and ordered the department to annul the decision and immediately reinstate the employee to her job, prompting that establishment to appeal the verdict. A court of appeals on Monday upheld the previous sentence, considering the sacking decision “null and void” and ordering the immediate reinstatement of the employee to her work.
