Telco worker issues iPhones in dead man’s name

A Syrian etisalat employee issued three iPhones using the passport photocopy of a dead customer, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

The father of the deceased man, AMO, 52, an Emirati, is a retired army officer and discovered the crime only when he the mobile phone he was using, which was in his son’s name ARA, got disconnected because of Dh21,000 in pending dues.

Checking with etisalat he found out that three iPhone numbers had been issued in the name of his dead son.

Investigating the case, police found that the SIM cards were being used by someone called Mohammed Shaalan, testified First Corporal Mahmoud Mohammed.

“We found out that the SIM cards had been issued by AAQ, 26, who confessed to the crime, saying that he had used passport photocopies he retrieved from etisalat’s files. He filled the application with the information in the passport, signed on the applications and then sold them to Mohammed Shaalan,”  Mohammed testified.

Omar Al Zubair, 29, Sudanese, communication officer testified that the accused who is on an Al Najm Services sponsorship for etisalat under a labour supply contract between etisalat and Al Najm company.

“The accused takes work orders directly from etisalat and is paid salary by the Al Najm company,” said Mohammed Saeed, 40, Syrian public relation managers of Najm Services.

Forensics reported the forgery of the iPhone applications by AAQ who was then referred to the court for stealing the iPhones worth Dh6,000, and forgery.
