Two jobless Iranians allegedly stopped a Dubai motorist claiming to be CID officers and asked him to get into their car while one of them drove his car away.

AT, a 31-year-old Indian clerk, was accompanied by his friend at around 12.30pm on a bridge leading towards Sheikh Zayed Road. The attackers later dropped him and his friend off and disappeared with his Honda car.

“A Corolla blocked my way close to the bridge so I had to stop. Two men got off the car and presented a card, claimed to be CID officers and asked me for my driver’s licence and the car’s registration card.

“The car’s registration had expired about a year ago, so the ‘policemen’ asked me to accompany them in their car to a police station, saying that my car shall be impounded.

“One of the ‘policemen’ drove my car with my friend sitting inside while I accompanied the other ‘policeman’ to their car and sat next to him. He took my mobile phone and switched it off. When I asked him which police station we were going to, he punched me in my face and asked me to shut up.

“He continued driving towards Al Quoz area where I repeated my question. He shouted at me saying “to a police station”.

He stopped at a petrol station, gave me Dh20 and asked me to buy him a mobile phone card. He shouted at me when I refused and insisted that I should get off the car. I took the money, got into the shop and bought the phone card. When I returned, I did not find him so I informed the police,” testified the victim.

The man who drove the victim’s car dropped his friend on Sheikh Zayed Road and drove away. From the car number plate of the accused, police found out that it was rented by BA, 36, an Iranian.

When the accused came to return the car to the rent-a-car firm, police arrested BA and confiscated 48 cans of beer from the vehicle.

The accused admitted driving the victim’s car away with the help of his compatriot, YM, 28. BA claimed YM had asked him to stop the victim and that was because of a dispute between the two over trading in alcohol.

YM stole the car and, after dropping the owner of the car and his friend, they met at the same place where YM handed over the car to BA, according to the records.

In addition to car theft and possessing alcohol, YM is also accused of impersonating as a CID officer as he had submitted another person’s health card to the police. He claimed to be the holder of the card to avoid penalty for overstaying his visit visa.
