Fight over movie seats led to sword attack

3 arrested for inflicting injuries to Mohammad Ali Ghuloom

Dubai Police arrested three people allegedly involved in attacking Baniyas goalkeeper Mohammad Ali Ghuloom at Mirdif City Centre on Thursday night.

Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazina, Deputy of Dubai Police Commander in Chief, said one of the arrested suspects SHS and another Arab man was quarelling over a seat at the cinema in the mall, when Ghuloom intervened.

This angered SHS. He called his friends AAA and MHS (the two other suspects held) and waited for the victim and the Arab man to walk out of the cinema before attacking them, 'Emarat Al Youm' reported.

Ghuloom said he suffered injuries to a hand and head and required eight stitches.

Maj Gen Al Mazina appealed to people to be alert and inform police if they spot anyone carrying weapons in public places. He added that the General Department of Criminal Investigation has two dedicated phone lines for such services. People can call on toll free number 999 or 042 661 228.

Dubai Police will take strict action against anyone who tries to violate laws or security.

 EARLIER STORY:

Mohammad Ali Ghuloom, goalkeeper of Baniyas football team, was attacked in Mirdiff City Centre Dubai.

He suffered injuries to his head and hand, reported 'Emarat Al Youm', when a person stabbed him with a sword on Thursday night while he was shopping at the mall.

Speaking to the Arabic daily, Ghuloom said he saw some young men trying to attack a man. No one in the mall were intervening, so he stepped in and asked the group of young men (about 15) to leave the couple alone.

He alleged that the men, annoyed with his interference, picked up a fight with him. One of the men was "carrying a white sword".

"I was beaten on the head and hand and it required some stitches, too," said the goalkeeper.

However, he managed to catch two attackers and the police have taken necessary action against them, he claimed.

More to the point, good on Mr Ghuloom for acting like a decent citizen and stepping in, how many others just walked on by?

Where was the security? Earlier, one of our neighbour's bike was stolen. Police after looking at the CCTV was asking them if they really wanted to file a case against a 16 year old. Its not about the age. At 16 he might steal cycles, at age 20 he might invade houses and at 30 he might rob banks and kill people.

We never visit any mall during the weekends. We do our shopping during weekdays but never during the weekends.

As an expat, I've always seen Dubai as one of the safest countries in the World. Is there a reverse trend here?
