Four Pakistanis along with a few fugitives allegedly confined a guard of a construction site and stole 14 tonnes of steel worth Dh28,000, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

According to the records two 25-year-olds - AA, shepherd and a jobless man - along with GHM and MAM, and a worker JMM, 37, confined Asaduzzaman Sheikh, 48, a carpenter who was assigned to guard a construction site, and stole 14 tonnes of steel on July 1.

BRB, Indian, worker, was accused of possessing stolen steel with his knowledge of its criminal source.

Assaduzzaman Sheikh testified that on Friday July 1 at around 6am while he was in his accommodation, Mazanurrahman told him that he saw a group of people loading steel from work site.

“I rushed to the site and I saw about ten people who were wearing in Pakistani dress loading steel into a pick up, using a lift. I tried to call the site engineer but one Toyota stopped by me and a man got down and asked me what am I doing here?, I answered him that I am the guard of the site and that I am calling the engineer to tell him what is happening here. I gave him the mobile phone upon his request…and all of a sudden three men held me and tied my hands with a piece of cloth and blindfolded me as well. They dragged me and shut me inside a room. About half an hour later another guard of the site arrived and released me,” he testified.

Sergeant Saeed Obaid told the court that the police received notifications about a number of thefts from the construction sites.

In this incident case, the guard of the neighbouring construction site had noted the number plate of the car.

Police arrested JMM who confessed to the thefts of cables and steal. He later led the police to other accomplices.
