With the help of two Sudanese, five Colombians allegedly burglarized a villa of a Pakistani family and stole the safe box, which contained jewellery, watches and cash of different currencies estimated at Dh1.055 million, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

This was not the only theft that gang had committed. They were earlier sentenced and deported in another case.

Sudanese clerk, MM, 20, met one Colombian, JD, 28, via Facebook and after a year of friendship, the Colombian revealed that he was a member of a gang specialized in burglarizing villas at different countries.

MM joined the gang and they stayed in a hotel in Sharjah before moving to a flat in Dubai Marina. MM had helped the gang rent the apartment by forging a photocopy of a passport.

MM then helped the gang rent a Range Rover from a car rental firm. They drove to Dragon Mart and bought tools to break into the villas.

The student drove around Jumeirah, Al Safa, Al Rashidiya areas studying the villas. They committed a number of thefts in Dubai before stealing from the Pakistani’s home on June 28 last year.

They climbed over the fence at night, and broke into the home through a window in the ground floor. They headed straight to the master bedroom and stole the safe box comprising gold and diamond jewellery and cash of different currencies, said AH, 42, housewife, to police.

Police found out that the Colombians had entered Oman on visit visas and entered UAE illegally.

The gang was earlier convicted of stealing Dh700,000 worth of jewellery and other items from a Dubai villa. Each of the five Columbians were sentenced to five years in jail followed by deportation for the crime.

Verdict will be issued in June.
