Sharjah Police arrested 11 Asian men involved in stealing rented cars by fitting them with GPS tracking devices and copying their keys with the aim of exporting them to a nearby country, press reports said on Wednesday.

Police said they arrested nine Afghans, an Iranian and an Indian targeting rented cars at the instructions of the gang chief living in a neighbouring country.

Police had mounted an extensive campaign to seize the thieves after receiving a report that a Toyota Prado was stolen in the emirate.

They said the man who had rented that car was identified and arrested, adding that he led the police to the other gang members.

The defendants confessed that they were taking the cars rented by that man to a mechanic shop in an industrial area, where they were fitted with tracking devices and copies of the car keys were made.

“Police arrested all the gang members in coordination with Dubai authorities…they confessed to have stolen many cars for export to a nearby country….the cars were found and the GPS devices were taken off,” the Arabic language daily Emarat Al Youm said.
