Hiring maid without reference: Dubai family drugged, robbed on day one

A maid robbed a family after spraying an anaesthetic substance on them, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

The victim RKK, 39, a sales representative testified that his family needed a maid so he started searching for one in the newspapers.

“I read an advertisement and called the maid at around 8pm on March 7, 2009.

“OB, 31, Sri Lankan, came to our house the next morning.

“She expressed the need to transfer her visa from her sponsor and agreed on the salary.

“The next day, I left the house with my wife in the morning.

“The maid stayed with my mother-in-law and my little son.

“At around 11am my wife called me and told me that the maid has stolen jewellery and cash and run away.

“I called the police. The theft is estimated at Dh34,000 jewellery and Dh18,000 cash,” he testified.

His mother-in-law, OKS, 52, testified that she was with her grandson in his room when the maid entered the room and stood behind her.

She smelled something strange, turned and asked the maid about the source of the smell.

In a few seconds she fell unconscious and when she woke up after about half-an-hour with the boy, the maid had disappeared from the house.

The maid also has a criminal record with the police.

The court adjourned the case for verdict until May 14.

Maid stole jewellery worth Dh300,000

Electrical engineer Ali Mousa, 48, Iraqi, testified that on December 3 at about 1pm, the family noticed that the maid was not in the house. “My wife checked the house and found her jewellery missing.”

The maid confessed to the crime and the court adjourned the case for verdict until February 26.
