Like in a Hollywood movie, a motorist was chased by two others in their cars near Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai. One of the chasers overtook the motorist at full speed and stopped suddenly, blocking his way, forcing him to stop.

The moment the motorist stopped, the chasers got out of their cars, rushed to him and demanded to see his identity card.  All this happened in broad daylight at 4.30pm last December 28.

“As I took out my wallet, one of the chasers snatched it from me, took out Dh4,975 that was in it and threw the wallet back into my car. The snatcher then sprayed a gas at my face that brought tears to eyes and asked me to leave. I left the scene and went to lodge a complaint at a police station. Later I recognised one of the car chasers when he was shown to me in an identification parade,” testified the victim ABB, 29, Indian.

“The chase started when a car behind me signalled me to stop but when I did not, a red saloon car suddenly overtook me from the right side, swerved in front of me and stopped blocking my way. The car behind me also stopped and the two chasers immediately got out of their cars and rushed towards me. They asked only me to show my ID. They did not ask the other passenger in my car. When I pulled out my wallet, one of them snatched and emptied it and threw it inside my car, then sprayed something at my face.  The same man shouted asking me to leave which I did,” the victim told investigators.

The victim’s companion repeated the same testimony. Police arrested MNN, 26, Sri Lankan visitor, who claimed that he overtook the victim’s car on the request of the driver who was ahead of him.

“I didn’t know the driver, he asked me to stop the car ahead of me, so I overtook him and stopped my car in front of him,” he testified.

Police later arrested MMH, 38, jobless Emirati. The victim and his companion recognised the two of them when shown to them in identification parade.

The records did not mention how police arrested the two accused.

The Court will reconvene on June 17.
