In cooperation with their counterparts in Sharjah, police in Dubai has arrested three Arab nationals and confiscated 4.6 million narcotic tablets valued at Dh115 million from them.

The drug seizure was the biggest in the UAE in this year, according to Hatem Fouad Ali, head the regional office of the United National organisation combatting drug trafficking in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states.

He said this during a press conference attended by Major General Khamis Mattar Balmazina, Commander in Chief of Dubai Police and Major General Abdul Jalil Mahdi, Director of the Department for Combating Drugs in Dubai. .

Major Balmazina said all the three men arrested were citizens of an Arab country. One of them named ‘JT’ worked as a manager in Sharjah. They had brought the narcotic pills into the UAE in three shipments via land routes and intended to export them to other Gulf states.

APF, another of the arrested men, was a dealer in Ras Al Khaimah who stored the pills in Dubai’s Aweer area.

The third person arrested, MAG, was a driver in Sharjah, who helped APF to store the drugs.

Major Balmazina said two other people, living in a neighbouring country, are also suspected to be part of the gang. One of them AO, who paid the rent for the warehouse used to store the drugs, is suspected to be the leader and main financier of the gang. AM, another suspect, is thought of played the role of mediator between the leader and other members of the group.

Major Balmazina said efforts are being made to track them down with the help of Interpol.

He said a police decoy had approached the gang, pretending to be a dealer in drugs. A time and place was agreed upon to take possession of the drugs. Two of the suspects were arrested from a Mercedes Ben car which was loaded with narcotic pills. The third suspect was nabbed from a building on Port Saeed Road in Dubai

The second defendant admitted to the police that he had bought 14 bags of drugs from the first defendant at Dh5,000 per bag. 14 more travel bags containing narcotic pills were found in the warehouse.

Major General Abdul Jalil Mahdi said the first defendant tested positive for drug consumption.
