An Indian man, Mustaq Mahaboob, has been languishing in Al Aweer prison for almost a year now even after clearing three credit card defaults.

Mustaq Mahaboob, 31, who hails from Goa, has now turned to the Indian Consulate for help to bail him out.

His Filipino girlfriend Candy Kabily has been running from pillar to post to free him.

Candy, a salesgirl working for a perfume shop in the Mall of Emirates, raised money to clear his outstanding credit bills. She sold her gold ornaments, iPhone, credit cards and even deposited her passport with an Indian money lender to bail out Mahaboob. She had to pay very high interest, she claimed. Yet he is still in jail because of the absconding case slapped against him by his employer.

Speaking to 'Emirates24|7', Candy said, “I spend Dh12,000 to clear his three credit card cases. Even after I cleared all his credit card dues he is still in jail because his employer filed an absconding case against him. The employer took money from me but refused to take back the charges.

If he is in jail for almost a year how can he be absconding and the company is aware of this situation."

“I am helpless and I cannot do anything more for his release,” she said, adding that whoever promised to help her have cheated her of money and documents.

“His boss promised to withdraw the labour absconding case but demanded Dh10,000 for the visa charges incurred by them. When I cleared the visa fees, they demanded another Dh12,000. It took almost a month for me to arrange that amount. After taking Dh12,000, the company official backed off and returned Dh10,000. They said the case cannot be withdrawn. The company officials informed me that if the absconding case is withdrawn, it may be blacklisted."

In order to clear the labour absconding case, Candy also got in touch with another person who claimed he could help her. He promised to bail Mustaq out but demanded Dh10,000. After collecting the money the man disappeared and stopped answering her phone calls or messages. Some important documents are also with him without which Mustaq cannot claim his passport back.

As long as the absconding case is not withdrawn Mustaq will have to stay in jail.

Candy and Mustaq have been in a relationship for almost four years and decided to marry, but that is when he got arrested and detained by Dubai Police in three credit card cases.

Mahaboob spoke to this website from jail and said that his problems started after he lost his job with Paris Gallery. He was unemployed for six months before he joined another company, Fourth Dimension General Trading, which supplied Apple accessories and products.

“They promised me Dh4,000 salary plus commission. In the first month, they gave me Dh4,000 but demanded back Dh2,000 to meet my visa expenses. When I joined the company, they did not tell me that I had to bear the visa expenses."

"Every month they gave me only Dh2,000 and I could not repay my credit card dues. I was a sales supervisor and I worked only five months for the company. My job was to visit clients outside, and the manager would mark me absent and cut my salary for no reason. Ultimately, I ended up with three credit card cases."

Candy now promises to bail him out under whatever circumstances. She earns Dh5,000 and takes care of her family back in Philippines. Even though it is difficult for her to manage everything, she pledges to support him.

Candy is in touch with Mahaboob's family in India and also urges the Indian Consulate or the Indian Embassy to look into the matter.

Candy said: "I will not give up unless and until Mahaboob is released.

There is little that I can do as most people around are only cheats."
