Jumping red lights kills six in Abu Dhabi

Drivers in Abu Dhabi committed 65 traffic offences involving jumping the red lights in the first quarter of 2012, resulting in the death of six people and injury of two, according to police statistics.

“We urge all drivers to slow down before the traffic signal and completely stop when it is red,” said Lt Colonel Mohammed Rashid Al Shamsi, director of traffic control at the Abu Dhabi Traffic police.

“Jumping the red signal could be fatal as it would result in a serious crash with other cars coming from the other side in most cases…drivers should be patient before committing that offence to save their lives and those of others."

He said Abu Dhabi traffic police have just launched an initiative to create awareness among motorists to be more careful when driving towards a traffic signal by reducing their speed and giving way to traffic on other side.
