Killer crossing at Ansar Mall leaves 2 hurt

Accident happened late evening on Monday

A pedestrian believed to have been killed in last night’s accident is said to be alive and undergoing treatment at the Kuwaiti Hospital in Sharjah.

Sources at the hospital told Emirates 24/7 this afternoon that two people – a male and a female – were brought to the hospital following the road accident last evening.

“No one has died. Both the injured are undergoing treatment and are in a critical state,” said a staff.

Eyewitness accounts had earlier said that one of the two victims had succumbed to injuries while crossing the main Al Ittihad Road near Ansar Mall in Sharjah. The accident happened at around 8.30pm.

The video here shows the spot where the two men crossed the road and the traffic density.

According to eye witness accounts the two were crossing the road from the Ansar Mall side of the road towards the residential area on the opposite side.

“The two managed to cross one side of the road but were hit by a vehicle speeding from Sharjah to Dubai,” said a staff at the nearby Al Farooj café.

“You can easily call it the killer crossing of Sharjah. Every other week we have an accident here, and most of them are fatal. Most of them occur at night,” said the staff.

According to him despite repeated incidents pedestrians hardly change their habits.

“In fact, just an hour after the accident, the moment the ambulances and the police left the scene I saw three others rushing towards the road and crossing it,” he added.

A senior official of Ansar Mall told Emirates 24|7 that at least two to three accidents happen at this crossing. “In fact we lost one of our own staff in such an accident. It is time something is done about it,” said Hamid Al Mansouri, director of Ansar Mall.

I sincerely request the authorities to build a pedestrian crossing - underpass or overbridge on this highway as early as possible to avoid any such accidents in future.

This is high time to build a footbridge in that area to avoid further fatalities.

There is a need to review roads and build more pedestrian crossings in the emirate as the city has grown a lot in terms of traffic & number of residents. There are several such spots where pedestrians have no option but to run to cross the road. Sometimes, bad traffic forces drivers to speed on roads when they see empty roads. It is difficult to control pedestrians without giving them some options to cross the ever busy Al Ittihad Road

It's a very, very serious matter. Authorities should build an underpass or foot over bridge to save any further casualty.

Very sad. The number of people dying on the same road are increasing. Requesting authtorities to come forward to find a solution to this. It is the deadliest road.
