A criminal court in Abu Dhabi sentenced an Asian man to three years for murdering his work colleague after he was pardoned by the victim’s relatives.

Newspapers said relatives of the victim of the same nationality sent a letter to court saying they have pardoned the defendant without diya (blood money) considering the poverty of his family at home.

The defendant and the victim were having a booze night together at their room in Abu Dhabi in 2008 when an argument erupted. The defendant then pulled a knife and stabbed his friend to death.

The court also ordered the deportation of the killer from the UAE and court sources said he would soon be out of jail after serving most of his jail term.

4.3 tonnes of bad mutton seized in Dubai

Dubai customs authorities seized nearly 4.3 tonnes of bad mutton which was on its way into the local market from another country.

Customs men at Dubai’s airport free zone had suspected the shipment which arrived from a “foreign country” and decided to have it tested.

“The meat had a bad odor and its colour raised suspicions…tests showed it was unfit for human consumption,” said Omar Ahmed Al Muhairi, director of the air cargo operations at Dubai’s Customs.
