An absconding Indonesian maid who sold her illegitimate six-month-old baby to undercover police for Dh4,000 is now standing trial at the Dubai Criminal Court.
The 22-year-old SM, admitted that she wanted to raise money to leave the country.
According to Prosecution reports, the woman was arrested in February in an undercover operation wherein an Emirati policewoman and her male colleague posed as a couple and approached her.
The policewoman said, “I told her that I was barren and was looking to buy a baby. She demanded Dh6,000 initially and then reduced the amount to Dh4,000. We agreed to meet her at a parking lot of a mall in Al Qusais.”
At the agreed time on February 4 when the maid exchanged her baby for Dh4,000, she was caught red-handed by waiting cops.
The accused told the court that after she fled from her sponsor in Ras Al Khaimah in 2011, she joined her friend in Deira and worked as a prostitute until December 2012.
“I received Dh30 per customer and made about Dh10,000,” she told the court.
The father of her baby - a Pakistani fugitive who works in Oman - was her client. “He asked me to leave the prostitution business and that he would take care of me. But when I got pregnant, he demanded that I abort. When I refused, he just disappeared and switched off his mobile,” the maid told the court.
She apparently returned to working as a prostitute and carried the baby to term. One of her compatriots then introduced her to a mid-wife, who helped deliver the baby on August 16, 2012.
“As I wanted to return home, I asked my friend to find me someone who could buy my baby,” she confessed.
Meanwhile, the Pakistani has been arrested and is charged with having consensual sex with the accused.
The police handed over the baby to the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children.
The court is adjourned until May 26.
