Malabar Gold Heist: Thieves on visit visa moved gold to Jebel Ali Port

Sharjah Police on Monday announced the arrest of three members of a four-member Asian gang that robbed the Malabar Gold and Diamonds, Rolla outlet on Saturday morning, May 20.

The thieves fled immediately after the alarm system in the showroom went off alerting the Sharjah Police, who reached the spot within a few minutes.

Brigadier Saif Al Zari, Commander in Chief of Sharjah Police and Colonel Ibrahim Misbah  Al Ajil, of Criminal Investigation Department explained that the Sharjah Police received an alarm from the jewellery store at 3.50am and the police were at the store after 5 minutes.

Colonel Ibrahim Al Ajil said the arrest of one of the defendants led to capturing two others on Saturday.

The entire robbery was caught on the several Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras inside and outside the showroom. This helped the police nab the perpetrators of the crime within thirty hours.

While one of the thieves was waiting outside, one broke open the display glass and other two collected pieces of jewellery on display weighting 7kg.

The value of the stolen gold ornaments, according to Malabar Gold and Diamond Jewellery was Dh1500,000 and it has been retrieved from the suspects - Pakistani nationals on visit visas.

One of the accused is absconding.

The quick manner in which the culprits were caught is a strong testimony to the efforts put in by the Sharjah Police and we are grateful for the remarkable achievement,” said Shamlal Ahamed, Managing Director - International Operations, Malabar Gold & Diamonds. “This reinforces our belief that the UAE is one of the safest place in the world to do business and once again strengthens our trust and faith in the system,” he said.

According to the police, the gang members were observing all the jewellery outlet in the area from May 20, 2016. The stolen gold was seized from the Jebel Ali Port, from where the gang  members planned to send it to Pakistan by cargo.
