Man accused of raping niece

A man from another Gulf country is facing charges of raping his 14-year-old niece at home in Abu Dhabi while he was drunk, newspapers reported on Wednesday.

The man had been sentenced by a court to 10 years in prison but has appealed the verdict after denying the charges.

He told the court of appeals that he returned home late night from a booze party and found his niece playing in the sitting room.

He said that he shouted at her for being awake at that time before going into his bedroom to sleep.

“In the morning, my sister jolted me out of bed and started to scream at me, saying that I raped her daughter,” the defendant told court.

Newspapers said the defence lawyer demanded the acquittal of his client at Tuesday’s trial on the grounds there was no evidence that he raped the girl although a medical report showed intercourse took place at that time.
