A man who set out to buy a used tyre landed unconscious in hospital only to realise he was robbed by the alleged trader and his group of friends.

Five Pakistanis are facing trial in Dubai Criminal Court in the case.

The victim, MAM, 30, told the court that he received a call on August 31, last year informing him of the availability of used tyres. The said person allegedly agreed to meet him that same day.

"But at the mentioned time, he did not turn up. Instead he called to say that he would meet me the next day morning. At around 7am, he called and asked me to come to Al Aweer Industrial area. I went there and he came walking and told me to wait until his senior comes. Then he left the place claiming that he would hand over some tyres to other dealers. He returned and he was holding soft drinks and asked me to sit in his car. He gave me an orange juice and then asked me to drive to Alaudeen Roundabout where I stopped at the parking lot of the promenade. I stayed there for five minutes before I fell unconscious and did not know what happened,” he testified.

First Sergeant Saeed Obaid testified that on September 3, the Operation Room received a call about an unconscious man lying on one of roads in Al Aweer Industrial area.

Obaid testified in court that the victim was rushed to the hospital. "Later he narrated how he was conned after being offered a drink. He said Dh9,700; €20; his mobile phone; bank cards; ID card and driving licence were missing."

Police nabbed the accused and confiscated more than Dh45,500, mobile phones [one of which was of the victim's] and a box of tablets from their residence.

The accused confessed to conning the victim by giving his sleeping pills.

Chemical expert testified that the used tablet was Lorazepam. "When used with juices it causes
unconsciousness," testified Hamda Ali.

The accused are TTG, 27, salesman; MAS, 32, clerk; and three visitors - MTJ, 28; ODA, 36; and MAM, 29.

They are also accused to endangering the victim's life.

The court will reconvene on January 20.
