Man on trial for insulting Dubai Police chief

A man from another Gulf Arab country is on trial in Dubai for insulting the Emirate’s police commander Lt. General Dahi Khalfan in comments he published on his Twitter page, press reports said on Thursday.

The 42-year-old man, identified as Mohammed, slammed General Khalfan for the second time on the grounds he did not try to resolve his problem presented to the police chief nearly four years ago, the semi official daily Alittihad said.

General Khalfan said he ordered the arrest of the man after assailing him as a police commander, adding that it was not the first time this man had done this.

“I filed a court case against him in the first time but then I decided to drop it in the hope he would not repeat his insults,” the General said.

“But it seems that this person was not deterred by the first case as he has committed the same crime again.”

The man told court on Wednesday he did not intend to offend the police chief in his comments on his Twitter page “Mohammed 96”.

“I meant those who are around him because they never convey to him the truth….I asked them many times to see the police chief but they refused,” he said. “If the General understands that I insulted him, then let me see him…I will apologize and bring a letter from him dropping this case.”
