A jobless man allegedly threatened a woman of posting inappropriate pictures of her if she does not give him Dh20,000, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

MRM, 24, Emirati, is also accused of stealing the mobile phone of the woman, identified as HNM.

First Sergeant Ibrahim Abdullatif testified that police received a complaint from HNM about a theft in her house at around 8am on September 30 last year. The woman told the police that her mobile phone had been stolen and the thief had demanded that she pay him Dh20,000 or he would publish on the Internet the inappropriate pictures that he found on her mobile.

“We asked her to go ahead with the man. She agreed with him to put Dh4,000 in an envelope under an electric cable near a Co-Op society at Oud Al Mateena area. He came with another man in a Sharjah registered car. He got off the car and took the envelope. But he saw us and he rushed to the car and drove away. Police chased the car which stopped after hitting a lamp post. The passenger and driver tried to run away but the police arrested one of them and the other was arrested later,” testified the policeman.

Police confiscated the victim’s mobile, watch and Dh190 cash in the car.

HNM, 23, Emirati employee, testified that at around 3.30am on Friday, she went to the bathroom and she took with her one of her mobiles while she left the other on her bed. “While I was in the bathroom, I got a phone call from my other mobile number. I thought it was my cousin but the caller imitated a little girl’s voice and hung up. I searched for my mobile but did not find it. I realised that it was missing from my bag. Later the thief sent me an SMS threatening to publish my pictures which he found on my mobile if I did not pay him Dh20,000. I informed the police who asked me to go ahead with him so as to catch him red handed,” she testified.

MRM, who has a criminal record with the police, denied the accusation.

The court adjourned the case until June 20.
