Dubai police smashed a major motorcycle gang that wreaked havoc in the city at night and harassed female drivers for a long time before turning its evil canons on the police themselves, a newspaper reported on Sunday.

Police said they had seized 44 motorcycles and most of their riders in a crackdown over the past few days in Mamzar and several other areas of the emirate.

The gang boss, nicknamed “the ghost leader” managed to escape and fled to Sharjah but his three-wheel motorcycle was seized by metal bars deployed by the police as they chased the harassers.

“Many of the riders seized face charges of harassing people and trying to attack the police,” said Colonel Saif Al Mazroui, Dubai’s traffic police acting director.

“One incident involved a rider who went into his house and brought a knife. He then tried to attack the police who seized his motorcycle.

"He also threatened the police men to get his dogs out and make them attack the police men. Our men then called for back up and that man and others were arrested.”

Quoted by the Dubai-based Arabic language daily Emirat Alyoum, Mazroui said some cyclists were also caught harassing women in their cars while others simply tried to provoke police men and plainclothes detectives.

“Some of the were making stunt demonstrations in front of the police and challenging them to catch them. Others were making obscene movements by their hands.

Most of them were arrested and their motorcycles confiscated. Their chief, known as ‘the ghosts leaders’ managed to flee to Sharjah after his motorcycle was seized. We will continue contacting him to turn himself over to the police,” he said.
