A mother of two daughters lost a legal battle to have custody of them after the UAE’s top court found that she had been absent from them for long periods of time.

A Court of First Instance ruled for the father but he lost custody after his wife appealed the sentence, prompting him to turn to the Federal Supreme Court (FSC).

The FSC decided to abolish the appeals sentence on custody of the two girls, aged 4 and 7, and to make the father pay Dh5,000 monthly alimony.

“The FSC decided to give the father custody of his two daughters after it was found that the mother had been absent for long periods of time from her home for treatment abroad and other purposes.

"The court found that the girls feel warmth and are more familiar with their father than with their mother,” Emarat Al Youm daily said without mentioning where in the UAE the couple lives.
