New twist in case of woman spared death

A woman who allegedly stabbed her compatriot, a driver, to death last April and was spared the death sentence by a lower court is awaiting a new verdict by the Dubai Appeals Court.

The Ugandan woman was sentenced to prison to be followed by deportation. But this May, the Prosecution appealed the verdict arguing that she had a chance to run out of the apartment if she had suspected that the deceased wanted to sleep with her.

She had told the court that the 26-year-old driver had sneaked into her room while she was lying on her bed and sat beside her. When she suspected foul play and wanted to call for help, he threw away her mobile phone. And when she attempted to run and went to the kitchen he immediately followed her. That's when she picked up a knife in order to frighten him, she added.

She pleaded that she did not intend killing him. “I had brandished the knife to defend my honour. I even rushed to Naif police station and informed them I had assaulted someone. I asked them to rush him to the hospital,” she told the court.

The prosecutors now argue that instead of running into the kitchen she could have ran out of the apartment. They claim that she fetched the knife from the kitchen and confronted him in the bedroom before stabbing him in the chest.

Forensic reports confirm he died of wounds sustained from a striking force from the person who was standing face-to-face with him. They confirmed that there were no signs of strife at the crime site.

Meanwhile, she had earlier told the court that the victim was a member of a group of human traffickers who lured her to come and work as a maid.

Her lawyer has now pleaded with the Appeals Court to consider the circumstances and acquit her.
