Fujairah police seized 211 cars in an ongoing crackdown on night races that have wreaked havoc on the emirate’s roads and disturbed thousands of residents until the late hours of the night, its police chief was quoted on Friday as saying.

Brigadier Mohammed bin Ghanim Al Kaabi said the police campaign had been ordered by Supreme Council member and Ruler of Fujairah His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sahrqi following persistent complaints by the residents.

He said the clampdown involved the deployment of scores of police patrols through the night to prevent the organization of races in violation of local laws.

He told the semi-official daily Al Ittihad that 136 vehicles had been seized in Fujairah city and its suburbs while 75 cars were impounded in Dibba and its outskirts.

“All towns and neighborhoods in the emirate have started to enjoy calm following that campaign… we have instructions from His Highness Sheikh Hamad to stop such violations.”

Kaabi said the campaign also targeted gatherings by young men after midnight on the Corniche and other key roads in the emirate.

“We have also informed their parents about such bad behaviour and the need to keep an eye on their sons… staying up until late night means they will not go to school in the morning… our campaign has already paid off as such meetings have disappeared,” Kaabi said.
