A cassette of an old telephone answering machine helped Dubai Police to solve a murder case.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, Major Hamad Juma, Head of Voice Examination Evidence Section of Dubai Police Forensic Department, said the department was investigating a murder that took place a few years ago.

“The victim was an Asian woman and the only evidence we had was a broken cassette of a telephone answering machine,” Major Hamad said.

The victim had installed the device in the 90s, he added.

“Luckily, we keep all types of voice machines in the department. We were able to solve this murder case because we had stored an old voice recorder which played these old cassettes,” he explained.

The suspect had broken the phone answering machine after committing the crime, Major Hamad said, and added: “However, we fixed the tape and played it. This is how we solved the case.”

“The suspect was the woman’s boyfriend. In the answering machine, we heard the suspect threatening the woman, saying he is going to kill her. Police arrested him and he has confessed,” Major Hamad said.

He said the Forensic Department stores all types of voice recorders and devices. “You never know when one of these devices will be useful to us. We also keep all types of security cameras and televisions,” he said.
