Dubai’s police denied reports that a little girl has been abducted from a hospital in the emirate and warned those who spread the rumor would be prosecuted.

The department of detectives and criminal investigation was reacting to rumors on social networks and blackberry phones that a baby girl has been snatched from a local hospital, expressing surprise over the spread of the rumor so fast.

“I am surprised by the spread of such rumors so fast although they are incorrect and baseless,” the department’s director Brigadier Khalil al Mansoori said.

“Such rumors could cause confusion in the emirate…Dubai’s police will hunt down those who spread these rumors so they will be prosecuted and punished,” he told the Arabic language daily Alittihad.

Mansoori said he believes the persons who propagated such reports could have relied on a drill conducted by Dubai’s police at one hospital as part of their regular exercises to test their capabilities and preparedness.

Nail pierces into worker’s head

A large nail pierced into an expatriate worker’s head when it penetrated a wall shot by another worker at a building under construction in Saudi Arabia and landed in his skull, a newspaper said on Wednesday.

Doctors in the northern town of Hafr Al Batin removed the nail after a two-hour surgery and said the patient was now in a stable condition.

“The nail pierced into the worker’s skull as he was leaning on the other side of the wall when it was shot by another worker,” Alriyadh daily said.

Abusive SMS costs man Dh6,500

A Kuwait appeals court fined an Arab man KD500 (Dh6,500) for abusing public servants and dignitaries through mobile phone texts.

The court upheld a previous sentence and ordered the defendant to pay the fine after lawyers for the plaintiffs submitted evidence of offending SMS.

“The court was shown the last four SMS sent by the defendant containing very ugly and obnoxious words against a person who enjoys great respect by everyone who has dealt with him,” Alwatan newspaper said.

Drowning child rescued by uncle in RAK

An Emirati man from Dubai managed to avert a family tragedy when he saved his six-year-old nephew from drowning while swimming at a beach in Ras Al Khaimah, a newspaper said on Wednesday.

The family was on a holiday at a five-star hotel in the northern city when the mother noticed that her son was drowning in the turbulent water on Tuesday.

After screaming, his father’s brother rushed to the water and pulled out the boy, who was unconscious with a bluish skin color.
“They rushed him to Saqr hospital in about 10 minutes, which helped doctors to save his life…,” said Dr Abdullah Al Nuaimai, the hospital’s director.

Abu Dhabi road tunnels get security cameras

Pedestrians using underpasses to cross to the other side in Abu Dhabi should avoid throwing waste or get involved in other malpractices as they will be caught by security cameras being installed underground in the capital.

Municipality workers were seen this week fixing advanced security cameras inside each underpass in the city of nearly 1.3 million people.

Each of the more than 30 pedestrian underpasses in the capital will get three security cameras-one in the middle and two at the edges of the tunnel.

“The project involves the installation of cameras at all underpasses in Abu Dhabi…we began the project this week and hopefully it will be completed before the end of this month,” an engineer at the site told Emirates 24/7.

Officials said the project, which covers all city roads, was prompted by persistent malpractices by road users, including random waste dumping, writing on the tunnel walls, smoking inside the underpass, and harassing women.

“Those involved in such practices will now have second thoughts before doing them again…these cameras are very advanced and offenders will be identified clearly,” the engineer said without elaborating on penalties.

Municipality and traffic police officials said last year more underpasses and bridges would be constructed in the capital as part of a long-term road expansion and improvement plan within the emirate’s Vision 2030.

Police have often urged road users to cross the road through underpasses and warned them against using the wrong crossing as offenders would be fined.

Police data showed more than 100 pedestrians were killed in Abu Dhabi in 2011 after using the wrong crossing.
