Police night patrol finds Dh1.3m in stolen phones

A police patrol suspected a pick-up van running late at night in the Fareej Al Marrar area and stopped it to find

stolen mobile phones worth more than Dh1.3 million.

On April 17 at around 2.45am, Sergeant Abdul Salam Saeed, was patrolling Fareej Al Marrar with his colleague when he noticed the suspicious pick-up.

“I suspected the vehicle and signed to the driver to stop, but he did not and instead, increased his speed.

“He lost control and collided into four cars parked at the side. Two men got out of the vehicle and ran in different directions,” Sergeant Abdul Salam Saeed says.

“Searching the area we noticed the doors of one of the shops open.

“We asked for support and technical teams to check the crime scenes,” he added.

The police then arrested LM, 52, and HG, 38, both Pakistanis on visit visas.

The police found 1,774 mobile phone sets worth Dh1,3,75,000 in value.

They were all taken from one single company, the owner of which told the police that a total of 1,975 sets were missing.

Police later found the other handsets near a mosque.

Camera footage showed six men were involved in the theft.

The court will give its sentence on September 15.

Land Cruiser used to rob taxi driver

Three jobless Pakistanis are accused of robbing a taxi driver, after asking him to drop them to a deserted area in Al Khawaneej, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

AS, 28-year-old Indian taxi driver was waiting in Uptown Mirdif when two men who spoke with him in Arabic and Urdu asked him to drop them to Al Khawaneej area.

One of them sat in the front seat and the other in the back.

“Upon reaching at the area, they asked me to drive a sandy route that leads to the desert. I was unable to move ahead with my car.

“They then asked me to wait until their friend came and picked them up.

“I asked them to pay Dh38, the taxi fare, and to let me go, but they said they would wait for their,” AS said.

“A beige Land Cruiser arrived and the man sitting next to me got out opened my door and punched me in the chest and then dragged me out of the car. He asked me to give him money and my mobile.

“I gave them about Dh400 to Dh500 and my wallet,” the taxi driver told the police.

The victim drove to the police station and reported the incident.

The police arrested AH, 26, the driver of the Land Cruiser who confessed to the robbery.

The court will reconvene on September 22.
