A UAE policeman, along with a student, allegedly robbed Dh1.78 million from two drivers and then burnt their car to destroy evidence of the crime, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

AA, policeman, and GM, student, both 22 years old, stopped a car on its way from Al Ain to Dubai and robbed the money kept in the vehicle’s trunk.

The two committed the crime along with other five Pakistanis who had planned it and had asked the two Emiratis to pose as CID officers.

On June 16, at around 12.30pm, RM, 44, Pakistani driver and SK, 23, Pakistani salesman, collected the money from their dealers and clients and put it in the trunk of a black Lexus and headed to Dubai.

After about an hour of driving and near Al Faqaa police station, two people ,who were wearing UAE national dress and were in a white Nissan Sunny car, stopped them.

One of the two men presented a military card and claimed to be a CID officer.

“I could not take a look at the card. However, they asked RM to present his driving licence and the car’s papers,” the salesman told investigators.

When the driver submitted the documents, the policeman asked him to get off the car. Then he took the car’s key and started searching the vehicle. When he did not find anything, he asked for the money.

“We suspected them, particularly because he asked us to open the rear box asking for the money and threatening that if we did not give the money, he will take us to the police station. We replied that we had no objection to being taken to a police station. The two asked us to enter their car and one of them drove our car claiming that they are taking us to a police station.

“On way to the police station, the ‘policeman’ who was driving us deviated in another direction. When we asked him about it, he told us that our car is near the petrol station and he will drive us there. When we reached our car, they two asked us to get off their car. After we came out, we managed to run away and call the police,” testified the salesman.

The driver who was accompanying the salesman repeated corroborative testimonies.

Police investigated the complaint and reviewing the CCTV cameras at the petrol station, they saw pictures of the two accused in addition to five other people who were waiting for them at the fuel pump.

Coordinating with Abu Dhabi Police, AA, policeman, and GM, student, and five Pakistanis, all of them drivers, were arrested.

Police confiscated Dh692,385 from the student’s car.

The policeman, from whom the police confiscated about half a million dirhams in addition to receipts for Dh74,300, admitted to robbing the two victims and burning their car in Abu Dhabi.

Police also retrieved Dh116,000 from the Pakistanis.
