A Syrian has been found guilty of forging property ownership documents and swindling Dh31,000.

The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced 28-year-old MAH to one year in jail. He will be deported after serving his term.

The victim, a Lebanese, testified in court that his wife saw an advt on dubizzle.com about a flat in Discovery Gardens Dh25,000. “I called the given mobile number and met the landlord introduced himself as Mohammed Al Shahiri. I gave him my wife’s passport copy; signed the contract and paid him Dh28,000 as rent and Dh3,000 as deposit. I got a receipt for the payment, too. He also handed me over, ownership certificate and a passport photocopy.

“Three days later, an Egyptian knocked at the door and asked me if I wish to renew my contract. I told him that I have just rented the flat and showed him the documents. I called MAH, and he confessed that he falsely claimed the ownership of the flat as he needed money and asked for forgiveness,” he testified.

MAH confessed before the police that he found a passport copy of a Syrian on the internet. He forged his passport photocopy by replacing the picture with that of the Syrian’s.

Dubai Lands Department confirmed that the ownership certificate copy was forged.

The Residency department also confirmed that the visa stamp was forged.
