Sharjah police finally arrested two thieves who have eluded the for more than a week after stealing bank client accounts through their ATM machines, using a miniature camera to monitor and record the cash card’s  PIN number.

Police said they arrested the two after suspecting the way they were watching ATM machines at some banks and people withdrawing money from their accounts.

They said that after they searched the two, they found plastic cards similar to ATM cards and a tiny device used in recording the finger movement of clients withdrawing money through cash machines.

“They were busy watching some ATM machines at some banks in one area…after suspecting them, our men searched the two and found magnetic plastic cards and the device used in monitoring the fingers of persons who withdraw money to record the PIN number…they then enter the data on a plastic card and use it to steal money from that account,” the police said in a statement.

The arrest followed reports by several account holders that some funds are missing from their deposits and that the banks had no answer for the problem.

Newspapers quoted police last week as saying several ATM machines have been robbed by unknown persons, using what they described as “advanced technology.”

They said that it involves miniature devices fixed just near the ATM card slot in the machine to monitor and record all data entered by clients withdrawing money.
