A 17-year old Egyptian girl, identified as Nouran A, was killed on Tuesday after she was run over by a minibus. The Sharjah Police reported that the young girl died of multiple serious injuries suffered in the accident, which took place on the Nazwa road going to Sharjah.

The police said the young girl was on a excursion with her school and the accident occurred while she was trying to cross the road at a place not allocated for pedestrians.

“Unfortunately, a mini bus was coming from the other side and couldn’t avoid hitting her which led to serious injuries, which led to her death,” the report stated.

A Sharjah police source was quoted in the Arabic press as saying: “An ambulance and Al Anjad patrol rushed to the site and paramedics tried to provide first aid to the girl, but she died on the spot.”

The bus driver has been arrested for investigation.

Killer crossing

Pedestrians crosing busy roads at areas not designated to do so has been a major issue in Sharjah.

The main Al Ittihad Road near Ansar Mall in Sharjah is another accident hotspot, with several people losing their lives.

The video here shows the traffic density on this road and how people risk their lives to cross the road.

In an earlier report in January this year Col. Abdullah Sultan, Director, Public Relations and Media, Sharjah Police, confirmed that this road witnesses a lot of run-over accidents caused while people cross the road.

Similar mishaps occur in areas such as Al Nahda near Sahara Mall and near Al Jazeera and Cooperative Society because there are not enough tunnels or bridges for pedestrians to cross over.

Colonel Sultan urged officials not to wait for budgets to construct bridges and tunnels in these places.
