Abu Dhabi court has ordered a shop selling illegal Indian television receivers to be shut down for a year.

The court also ordered the shop’s owner be deported and imposed a fine of Dh200,000, reported ‘Al Khaleej’.

The incident came to light following a CID raid at the shop that discovered unauthorised subscription services and setting up of boxes from Indian pay-TV operator, Dish TV and computers.

The verdict is subject to appeal, which should be filed within 14 days.

Most Indian families in the UAE use imported Dish TV receivers from India to watch their favourite television programmes, which are timed to suit viewers in the Gulf.

David Butorac, CEO, OSN, was quoted as saying: “The court verdict reiterates the seriousness with which the government regards TV piracy. We will continue to work with the authorities to curb TV piracy, which adversely impacts the TV and creative industry of the UAE.”

Based on complaints filed by OSN, the Department of Economic Development and Criminal Investigation Departments across the UAE have conducted 47 raids so far.

The payment of Dish TV is usually made through arrangements back in India.
