Suspect flees from cops, runs into officer

A Ugandan visitor, who overstayed his visa, used his friend’s ID to avoid arrest, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

First Corporal Yaser Salam testified: “On April 28, at around 5.30pm, we stopped a Toyota Corolla car and asked the three Africans for their IDs. I noticed the picture on one of them was not of the person who handed me the card.”

“While confronting him, he opened the car’s right front door and ran away. My colleague and I ran after him. Unfortunately for him, he was running in the direction of a custom’s officer who was passing by. As the customs officer noticed us running after the suspect and caught him and handed him over to us,” Salam added.

The ID he submitted was that of his friend’s.

“Three months earlier, I met my friend who gave me his ID to help me avoid arrest because I overstayed my visit visa and my passport has been seized by the company,” admitted ML, 30.

The court will reconvene on August 11.
